28 Fantastic Free WP Themes
For a change I thought it might be fun to share some of my favourite free themes. There are some amazing free themes out there, a few of which could be seen as rivals to premium themes in terms of functionality and good looks. Here are my personal favourites; some are very popular but others may be less well-known.

What are your favourite free themes?

Most of them look great, but most of them also follow this trend of not taking into account people that are still using the 800×600 screen resolution for a number of reasons. I tend to make websites that everyone can access, and sometimes awesome looking templates don’t help. I can teak some of them, but it’s not always easy. Thanks anyway for the list.
Thanks for including my theme Checkmate! I didn’t really mean it to be a magazine theme but people are using it for that haha
Tons of great themes in this list, good job.
Hi Calitoe, thanks for your comment. I guess sometimes web designers have to undertake a balancing act between maintaining accessibility while also fulfilling their creative vision. I believe that the popularity of the right-sidebar is because most bloggers are prioritising their content over their sidebars and are lessening the need for those with smaller screen resolutions to constantly scroll across to read an article.
Hi Curtis, you’re very welcome. Checkmate is a great theme.
Hello from Indonesia…
I’ve tried to use DIRTY GIRL theme for my new blog (http://www.acehjurnal.com)
I loved the style, but the problem happened with I.E, coz the right sidebar moved to the bottom left.
And when I opened the demo of the original theme with I.E, the problem also appeared.
P.S.: Sorry 4 my poor English…
Hey Irwan,
That doesn’t sound good. You should contact the theme author, Kerry Webster, at the theme’s release post.
In the meantime, you could try downloading the theme again in case something went wrong the first time.
If the theme looked fine when you first installed it on your site, but looks wrong after putting some new code in the header/sidebar, then I’d check that the code is correct or just remove it and start again. I know from past experience that sometimes the smallest code error can completely mess up your site layout.
Thanks for featuring OpenBook in yor list, which is a great one btw!
You’re very welcome, JBJ. It’s a great theme.
Thanks for spreading the word about OpenBook! I just wrote a tutorial about customizing OpenBook, you can read it here if you’d like.
